AVOID THESE FOODS
It’s vital to provide your body with all the necessary nutrients it needs to produce hormones and neurotransmitters. But it’s almost as important to reduce the intake of foods that can cause inflammation and allergies, because they too can affect your overall health and well-being.
• sugar
• gluten
• corn
• tomatoes (with diagnosed allergy or inflammation in the body)
• eggplant
• sunflower oil
• corn oil
Dairy products: Avoid them if you know that you can’t tolerate or have an allergy to them, because they can cause inflammation in the body. On the other hand, if you can digest cow’s milk or have no allergies, dairy products won’t bring on inflammation.
Foods that lead to unstable blood glucose levels and an elevated insulin response: sugar, sodas, gluten, and fruit juices. If you want to sweeten your food, choose a sweetener like organic honey that hasn’t been heated, agave syrup, or coconut sugar.
Alcohol: Although small amounts of red wine can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it still has no positive effect whatsoever on hormones and mood. Instead, alcohol blocks the estrogen receptors in the body and elevates the insulin response.
Certain artificial colorants (commonly found in sodas and candy): They can lead to hyperactivity, trouble concentrating, and lack of impulse control.
Artificial sweeteners: Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener used in, among other things, diet sodas and most brands of chewing gum. It contains chemical toxins that can disturb your neurotransmitters’ function and cause migraines, depression, rage-like episodes, joint aches, and muscle spasms. It can also cause symptoms akin to multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
Trans-fatty acids (transfats): You’ll find them in many processed foods, such as French fries, margarine, chips, biscuits, cookies, instant sauces, instant soups, ice cream, baking chocolate, bread, pastries, ready-to-eat meals, Fritos, stock cubes, and Promise® low-fat butter substitute.
IBD STUDY
A study published in the IBD Journal showed that inflammatory bowel disease could be caused by the artificial sweeteners saccharine and sucralose (Splenda®). These two sweeteners are common ingredients in today’s light and diet products.
